Major CW: mentions of potentially harmful paraphilias among other unusual sexual behaviors/interests
Most sources I can find on the Internet say the difference between a kink and a fetish is:
Or at least, it's not how anyone I've met uses those words in speech and I can't find any good sources for those definitions. If anyone has sources lmk, but regardless I have a definition that I think is more accurate, interesting, and useful:
Basically kinks are verbs and fetishes are nouns
Bondage is a kink, but rope would be a fetish
Watersports are kinks, pee is a fetish
Incest, feet, latex, diapers, and blood are all fetishes
Impact play, bdsm, forcefem, petplay, and chastity are all kinks
Fetish has a much more negative connotation than kink, but why is this? Wouldn't sex acts have more capacity for harm than sex objects? The reason for this is because kink implies consent. If there isn't consent it doesn't qualify as kink. Fetishes however do not imply consent. Some fetishes are even inherently unconsensual to engage in sex such as bestiality, pedophillia, and necrophilia.
You can also fetishize groups of people (for example trans people or people of a specific race) this isn't to say attraction to people in those groups is non-standard, but the people who fetishize those groups usually do see it that way. For example people who are into raceplay are often racist.
I think the allure of taboo might be the only way fetishes form but I'm not sure, I'd love to hear other people's thoughts about this.
Fetishes and kinks are often very intertwined like pee fetishes and watersports, but it's very possible to enjoy watersports without a pee fetish, or to have a pee fetish and be uninterested in watersports.
Fetishes are also more embarrassing than kinks. Kinks can just be a form of sex you enjoy doing, you don't have to be drawn to anything atypical to enjoy them, you just have to be open minded about forms of sexual expression. Fetishes on the other hand are a reflection of genuine atypical desire, the definition of cringe.
None of this is to demonize fetishes, fetishes are inherently taboo but tons of social taboos are pretty silly. But it's also important to draw a line of what is amoral somewhere, and if you have a fetish that crosses that line it's important to acknowledge that and to speak to a mental health professional about it.
